Hello all! and welcome to another bomb list of a blog post!

Ever since COVID-19 happened and shut down/forced people to work from home I found that my productivity and motivation plummeted. Like really dropped off.

I would wake-up have my coffee, mosey my way to my home office and half ass do my work. When the day ended and supper was done, I would go lay on the couch or in bed. That was on repeat for months! It got to the point where I just felt shitty. I knew I had to make better decisions.

So I sat down and thought about all the things that made me feel good or when I was more productive what I had done to get into that mindset.

So here is my list of things you can do when you want to be productive that have helped me.

picture of Devan walking down a gravel road in Saskatchewan looking like an album cover

This is one that is like hands down the best. I remember when I was in school on the mornings that I worked out, I always got more done. I also carried myself differently. I didn’t shy away from asking questions about school work I thought might be dumb.

It was the same thing when I would go for a walk in the morning before work. I got the blood pumping and the endorphins doing their thing. At work I never second guessed asking my boss questions that might be stupid. SO the pattern became clear, moving my body in the morning helped me get into the headspace to get stuff done.

photo from the top of a coffee cup with coffee in it. The cup sits upon a white table with a plant to the left of it. Some leaves are reaching over the cup of coffee.

This one seems silly but I feel like it helps. There was a few weeks where my partner bought the wrong coffee. For those few weeks I was not as productive. Maybe it was because I wasn’t drinking as much coffee because I hated the taste of it maybe it was because my morning was starting off on a sour note. Either way I knew I had to fix this. Coffee time is my wake-up time, so if I can make it a good experience I will have a better day and will be much more positive and productive

There are days where I am a lazy ass and don’t shower in the morning or maybe I decided to shower at night. I can say that showering in the morning is like an extra bonus to a new day. Fresh start to a day and a clean body, look out world I am coming for you! I have found that this has helped me overall have a great day. I feel fresh and my mind is fresh to get stuff done.

photo of Devan in her PJs on the couch with an unimpressed look on her face while holding a cup of coffee in a mug that says looking sharp with a cactus

Yes that means you will have to wake up earlier then maybe you want to, but if you can give yourself that peaceful time before going to work / doing whatever you will thank-yourself. On the days where I didn’t give myself the time to wake-up and process it was morning, I was usually very distracted at work. On a good chunk of the rushed days I would forget something at home, usually my lunch, which would cost me more money cause I am not making it through the day with no food. Now I know that this isn’t always a possibility if you have kids or are a night owl, but it is something that I have found to make my mental space better to have a productive day.

I don’t know about you but I am very list oriented. I make a lot of lists. My desk is often full of many different lists. This is how I organize my life. Having one of them be what I want to accomplish in a day is awesome. It doesn’t have to be some huge ass list of things that need to be done but just a few items. Have just a few items can help you slowly make that overwhelming list more doable. Even if it is just three thing, it is three things that I have to get done in the day. If I want to accomplish more so be it, but if I want to end at that list I can. Having a list like this makes it so much easier for me to get things done because I look at the list and figure “hey I can do these three things no problem.” When it is a large ass list, I want to go curl up in my bed and then do nothing.

Before my coffee in the morning I drink a glass of water, first off to help get my vitamins down second get give my body some hydration and get the gears going. Doing this in the morning has just helped me and my body. After 8 hours of no water, the body appreciated it. It also helps me get to my daily hydration goals…. oh btw have you drank your water today?

This seems weird but I find it very beneficial. I have been actively making this apart of my daily routine and it has made my life SOOOO much better. Normally I would save cleaning up the house to Saturdays. It would take me half the day to just tidy the house. In my most recent book I read (Atomic Habits review coming soon) this is called resetting the room. This means when you leave a room you put it back exactly how it was. Now all I have to do is really wash the floors, vacuum, and clean the bathrooms on Saturday. This is saving me SO MUCH TIME!!!! So much more time for activities and getting bigger projects done. I know that this one doesn’t really work if you have kids but even if you do it some of the time I am sure it will make your life easier.

This helps me out so fucking much. I get my coffee set up so it is brewed for when I wake-up. I have my lunch made and ready to go. I have my clothing set out and ready to go. Doing all of this helps my morning go so much smoother and I am less likely to forget my stuff. It really does make for a smoother day. This one kind of goes with enjoy your morning routine. when the decisions and hard work is done before your mind is free to think about other things like the stuff on that to-do list!

So there it is, everything that I do to make sure that I have a productive day. I have found that even doing a few of these things just helps me get into the right headspace to tackle my day.

I hope that some things on this list are helpful to you. If you have something that helps you be productive in a day let me know in the comments! I am always looking for things to help me.

Until next time!

Hello all! It has been a while since I actually wrote something that was not a book review, but I come with some awesome stuff to check out while or if you are traveling in south Saskatchewan.

I really have not gone to southern Saskatchewan other than to visit friends in Regina. So when I was casually just looking at things to do in Saskatchewan (thanks COVID-19) I found some awesome places that I knew I had to visit.

Now that I have some spare time on my hands, I decided to go on a solo road trip and visit all of these places that I wanted to go to.

I will say there is probably way more stuff to do in southern Sask, but I was a girl on a mission to get to all these places in just a few days so here is my list.

1. The Great Sand Hills

In Saskatchewan, there are two super sandy areas. One being accessible by plane that are the Athabasca Sand Dunes. Then there is the Great Sand Hills which are accessible by car.

There are a few hills here I believe, I only adventured the one because it was 33 degrees Celsius out, I am a little fatty whose cardio is horrendous and I was fucking warm.

I will say that the one hill I climbed was amazing! The sand was so soft! It was exactly like some beaches in Cuba.

There was a family there who just came out to play in the sand for the day and I thought that was the cutest thing. It is just one big sand box.

2. Grotto Gardens

This stop is just outside Maple Creek and it is definitely an awesome place to stop. There is a restaurant to order food and a little gift shop to get some local goods. But the best thing about this place is the goats!

There were some other animals there too but I felt like the goats were the main animals. there is a little area where you can go and pet the goats and feed them. There is feed available for 25 cents I believe.

There is a whole goat apparatus here so you get to watch the goats climb up top where you can also feed them by a pulley system. On Sundays they do have goat yoga, which would be awesome to go to, if I didn’t live 4 hours away.

The whole area here is really awesome and beautiful and is definitely worth a stop if you are near by.

3. Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park

this is at Bald Butte

The number one reason that I was stopping here was because it is a dark sky preserve. I love looking at the stars and if you are away from any light pollution, the night sky looks so fucking amazing! It really just makes you feel small and knowing that the universe is so big is quite emotional ( for me at least)

So the original reason I was coming to Cypress Hills was for the night sky, but once I arrived my literal first reaction was holy shit this place is gorgeous! The park is just massive amount of trees. I was like this feels like BC because of all the trees and slight hills.

this was the view just outside my room

Actually there are two parts of the interprovincial park. There is the centre block and the west block on the Saskatchewan side. The centre block is more like a tourist area. There are Cabins you can rent, lots of camping areas, and a few other things.

The west block has a few notable areas to also check out. When I entered the west block, you are driving up quite the hill surrounded by trees again and many curves and swerves (aka BC like). Overall I will be going back and hopefully spend more than a night there.

4. Conglomerate Cliffs

overlooking the valley standing on the edge of the cliffs

I never thought I would see such a breathtaking landscape in Saskatchewan! But I did. These cliffs are super accessible by car and are just amazing. You overlook Adams Lake and the rolling hills. The cliffs can be found in the west block of Cypress Hills. All I can say is if you have a chance visit this spot, the photos are not doing it justice.

There is also the Hidden Conglomerate Cliffs, which require a hike. I fully intended to go to them, but once I started I soon found out that it was much more of a vertical hike than I was capable of. That with the fear of hiking alone and the warning of cougars (low but still a possibility) I decided that I would come back another time, with others for encouragement and safety.

5. Castle Butte (Big Muddy)

The best way to describe Big Muddy is like this, You know the big red rock that stands alone in Australia? Also known as Ayers Rock or Uluru. It is like that but not nearly as big or square and not in Australia. It is kind of like that. This is really an awesome stop. You are surrounded by rolling hills where you can see the layers of rocks that formed it. You can also climb Big Muddy if you feel obligated to do so. I was watching people coming down from the top and they were basically sliding down on their asses because it was such a steep path. So with that I was like NOPE and just walked around the rock.

So these are all the places that I hit on my small solo road trip. I will say take your time and stop in at other places becuase between all of these places and then back to Saskatoon it was 1500km.

There are a few small towns in Saskatchewan that have interesting pieces of art that the town boasts as their thing. I stopped in Leader, Saskatchewan because they had a huge adirondack chair ( I tried sitting in it but it was very sloped and my sandals were not having it.)

me in front of the big adirondack chair

So here are some places to visit if you are in south Saskatchewan or are just looking for something to go and see. It was an awesome trip overall and I highly recommend all of these spots.

Is there somewhere in south Saskatchewan that I didn’t mention? Let me know in the comments!

until next time!

29 things that I learnt from my 29 years

Hello! look at me go, two blog posts in one week! I am really making up for lost time! But in all seriousness, I had planned to post this one the week before my birthday (oops). When that time came I didn’t have my list together nor did I have the motivation to write anything.

So this weekend I drank 3 coffees and put in the work. At first I was like I have learnt so much in my 29 year ( like how to be a human) that I would have no problem making a list of 29 things. Then I got to thinking, I want to make this better then just things that most people know. I want to make this a list of things that will benefit people.

So here you go 29 things that I have learnt in my 29 years.

  1. Your worth is not based on your looks

You worth has never been about how you look but for some reason that is how I was raised.

2. When people say you can’t do something it is showing their limits not yours.

I have been told many times that I can’t do things. Well I can and the only thing stopping me is myself. Just because others can’t do something doesn’t mean you can’t… prove it to them.

3. Material goods won’t make you happy

This one I learnt the hard way. You can have as much shit as you want and you might feel a temporary happiness but it will soon go away.

4. Don’t worry about what others thing of you

honestly if you care more about what others think then how you feel you won’t find happiness. DO YOU BOO. others opinion don’t matter.

5. You have to give respect to get respect

you have to start off giving respect. Once they start disrespecting you then you should peace out. Also respect you elders is Bullshit, they need to respect you too.

6. Don’t let the fear of others thoughts stop you from living your life

don’t be scared to wear a bikini because of what others might think. other probably don’t care and if they do they are a piece of SHIT. This also goes for other things you might be holding back on.

7. Ask dumb questions

if you are thinking the dumb question there are probably others who think it too. Also if it helps you understand something better is it really a dumb question?

8. Own up to your mistakes

I learnt this one earlier in my life. So what you fucked up. Everyone does at some point, we are all learning.

9. All daunting things can be done

you don’t get everything done all at once. It takes many little steps to get to that goal.

10. Move your body

move it everyday. be it stretching, walking, or yoga just move it.

11. Listen to your body

don’t push yourself further then you can physically can go. It won’t end well.

12. Think outside the box

people who think outside of the box or go above and beyond are the ones that have amazing ideas / projects. I was always jealous of those people before I figured this out.

13. The worst they can say is no

I always think of this when I am doing/ asking something. If I am nervous or scared I think the worst they can say is no.

14. Crying doesn’t make you weak

growing up I always though crying made you look weak but it doesn’t. it shows that you feel things which is a human trait, why hide it?

15. Listen to your gut

your intuition is such a strong thing. make sure you listen to it. It can save you a lot of time and trouble.

16. Speak kindly to yourself

I use to never speak kindly to myself. I would tear myself down all the time. Why? I am a Human and I am the one human I am around all the time. I don’t speak to my friends like that so why am I doing it to myself?

17. Don’t take yourself too serious

sometimes you have to laugh at yourself. I do a lot of dumb shit, and i am not embarrassed of it. I just laugh and remember not to take myself too seriously.

18. You don’t have to do what society tells you

if you know me you know I am all about this one. Just because society tells me I should do something doesn’t mean I have to. I actually will probably do a 180 and run to the complete opposite.

19. Let yourself feel things

feel things because it is so mentally and physically freeing. You lean so much about yourself when you allow yourself to feel.

20. Talking is a powerful tool

words are one of the more important ways we communicate and it is a powerful thing. Always be conscious about what you are saying and how you are saying it.

21. Sometimes you have to take a risk

risks can be scary but sometime they are worth it. If you feel that it is worth it take that risk.

22. Invest in yourself

if you know that something will make you happy or make you feel better, you should invest in it. The initial cost will be worth it if it helps you get to a better place.

23. Be weird

everyone is weird in their own way. Just because you may not be what society deems as “normal” doesn’t mean you are not awesome. Fuck what society tells us. No one is the ideal person NO ONE!

24. Make time for yourself

always make time for yourself. If it is self care or just being a vegetable on the couch for a few hours. You need it! You cannot pour from an empty cup.

25. Don’t get lost in comparison

don’t compare yourself to others. You cannot see what they are hiding or what they went through to get to where they are.

26. Be kind

always try to be kind even if the other person is being a twatwaffle. The world needs more kindness.

27. Give it your best

your best might very from situation to situation but if you believe you are doing your best that is all that matters.

28. The answer is always no if you don’t ask

always ask, you never know what the result will be.

29. Question things

sometimes asking why is the most freeing thing. When someone has to break down why they do something it can show you a lot.

So there you have it 29 things that I have learnt in my 29 years! I hope that you got some paradigm shifting notions from it. Let me know if you did or some things that you have learnt in you lifetime! I am very excited to make a whole new list for my 30 things in 30 years, I better start working on it now so It will actually be ready for the week of my birthday!

I got this book from the library because it was marked as an indigenous author. I want to try and read more indigenous authors to learn their stories.

Honestly I havent had much luck when I go to the library and wonder around to find books. The past few times I have done that I walk out with a few books to try to read and I can’t even make it past the first few pages.

So this time when I went to the library I grabbed a few books, one of them being Tilly. It is a shorter book (~200 pages) so I figured I could push myself to finish it even if I could not get into it. Well I was able to get into the book! I am so proud of myself.

Tilly follows the life of Tilly, a young Cree, Lakota, and Scottish girl. The story moves through her life in Canada and ultimately takes you on a journey.

Like I said this is a short book, so you don’t get super in depth with Tilly but you get enough of a glimpse to grow attached to some of the people.

I learnt a lot in this book, not just about another person’s life but about different aboriginal cultures and aspects that I didn’t know about.

I didn’t think that I was going to love this book in the beginning but I ended up loving it and really becoming attached to Tilly.

I highly recommend this book if you just want a quick read that doesn’t make you think to hard. It took me on an emotional journey and I loved it.

Well it has been just over a week since the new year and new decade have started. I don’t know about you but that is exciting!

I am not a new years resolution person at all. I never really like the word, maybe because growing up a new years resolution was always associated with diet. This isn’t the case for everyone but if I was playing a word association game, those two words would go together instantly!

another common phrase I hear all the damn time is ” new year, new me!” I don’t know about you but I like myself and I don’t want a new me. Sure there are habits I would like to break but that doesn’t make it a whole new me. I also recognize that I will fall back into those habits if I am not thinking about it. So I don’t want to have a resolution at the beginning of the year where I know I will fail and just have to keep trying. So rather then having a new years resolution, I have new years goals ( kinda the same thing but it feels better to me.)

Goals are something you want to reach and work towards. Mine are for the end of the year because it gives me plenty of time to achieve them and is a great time measurement. So here are what my goals for 2020 are

1.Do more yoga

me doing tree pose cause I am a noob

I love a good stretch and moving my body. Sometimes I don’t do that though. so at the end of the year I hope to be doing yoga every day. I sweat really easily so I always end up sliding around on the mat so I am taking tips to help with that. Also my wrists always end up hurting and my talons tend to get in the way if I use my fists, also taking tips to help with that. SO we will see where I get with this goal. Updates will be on my Instagram, so make sure to follow me to see my progress @devan.smiles

2. Get to 500 followers

Speaking of Instagram, one of my goals is to reach 500, which is probably a little low but I wanna start small and then get to a bigger goal. My goal was to reach 100 followers by the end of 2019, which I am sure I would have gotten if I would not have gotten locked out of my Instagram account! but oh well! I will just have to hustle a bit harder to make up for the last 10 followers.

3. Consistently write on my blog

this it really just to keep myself entertained. I honestly get very board so I really need my creative outlets to keep me going. This one should not be hard for me but it is still a goal cause maybe I fall back into a habit where I am just a lazy butt and don’t do it. Look for new blog posts every second Thursday! Also please keep me accountable!!!

4. Read 20 books completely

this one may be a bit hard for me just because if I go through a period where I have duds of books I lose interest. I need a very interesting book that keeps me intrigued, usually a sci fi novel. So I am looking for suggestions. Throw in the comments, send me a dm on insta with book suggestions. I want them all!! also I update my goodreads page once I finish a book so check that out also (can be found under other interesting things)

5.Try and get good at photography

I feel like this one is just me practicing and doing the learning to get good. That means that I have to go out and do it though. With this goal in mine I signed myself up for a photography class right when the new year started so hopefully this will kick start this goal. But again follow me on Instagram to see my progress. That is really where I will post my awesome pics.

So those are my goals for 2020. It is a small list but I didn’t want to overwhelm myself. I also felt like these are the ones I really want to focus on and work towards.

What are your goals for the new year? Let me know I love hearing what others are doing as well!!

easy and cheap Halloween costumes

Welp it is that time of year, the week before Halloween. I don’t know about you but I always get caught up in everyday life. I don’t even realize it is Halloween and I am scrambling for a costume so I don’t look like a fool at whatever Halloween party my friends and I have decided to go to.

So this year because I have been planning out stuff for my blog and Instagram and realized it is spooky szn with more than a days notice, I have made a list of costumes that you could possibly build out of everyday items or at least probably thrift or make very easily.

John Goodsen in Risky Business AKA TOM CRUISE’S CHARACTER

this one is pretty easy. Find a white over sized button up, some knee high mens socks (or your own regular socks) and some black sunglasses! That is it so easy.

Find a denim-ish shirt, roll up the sleeves. Tie a red bandanna around your head and show off your guns all night!

Make yourself some little piggy ears, and draw or make a snout. Walk around in a blanket all night. I feel like this will be the most comfy costume of all.

This one is more for the techy people out there. Grab a white tee and draw or use letter stickers and put Error 404 on it. You can go a step further and put costume not found but I guess it depends on you.

I feel like I barley have to explain this one because most people should know exactly what I am talking about. All you need is a hoodie (preferably purple or blue) big sunglasses, and a sign that says “She doesn’t even go here!” put the hood on and scrunch it around your face. TA-DA an amazing costume!

I love this one. Really all you need to do is make the little heart with a descriptor of it. I would just dress as myself and I would be the beanie baby. If you have an animal onesie you can put that on also.

This one is a bit more challenging but I think is worth it. Also you can go as little or as much as you want. I only did my face, but there are some people who do the whole thing. I suggest using a photo to reference . Pinterest has some great references. I used eyeliner and eye shadow for the black and concealer as the highlights on my lips.

I think this one is super easy. All you really need is solid color clothing. I choose black…. cause that is really all I wear. Then grab some white paper and write PANTONE or print it on the bottom with the registered trademark symbol. Then you can find the number you are trying to be or make it up and the name of it. Super easy!

This one will require you buying a big gift bag, but they are not too expensive. I suggest the dollar store grabbing a big bag and some tissue paper. Cut out the bottom and BAM! wear it kind of like a dress. I also suggest making a different handle to wear around your neck .

if you have a pink, red, or yellow shirt this one is easy. All you need to do is make a little head piece. Get some plastic headband from the dollar store and some green foam. cut out leaf like shapes and hot glue them to the headband. Boom you are now a strawberry or pineapple.

So there you go! some easy DIYs for costumes. I know that I will be using one of these for this years Halloween. Let me know if the comments which was your favorite or if you are going to try one of them out!

Ways to reduce waste

A big conversation everywhere is the environment, and in the grand scheme of things it may seem like you doing anything may not help combat the battle to change it, but it does. You may seem like a single person and you doing your part CAN help. I think that 7.53 Billion people trying to make the environment better, Fuck even a quarter of that, can make a difference. Here are some tips to help you do your part to make the world a little bit greener.

Get a reusable straw

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is dsc_0003.jpg

I Honestly never used plastic straws unless it was already in the drink, but I was reading about how drinking liquids through a straw help prevent staining. So I bought a metal reusable straw. It is honestly the most amazing thing ever. I literally use it all the time (mostly if I am drinking out of a can or for a glass of water ( it really helps when being a lazy ass and laying down). One of the reasons it took me so long to buy a reusable straw was because I use to take smoothies in a metal Starbucks tumbler, and at the end of the day there would be shit stuck up the straw (no matter how many times I washed it) and I figured that it was not sanitary. After that happening many times with the “reusable” straws I gave up, but then there were straws that would come with a cleaner. This was just a more durable pipe cleaner that crafts were made of when I was a kid. I was sold! This was going to make my skepticism of the sanitary straw obliterated. So I bought a straw and I am never looking back. If you live in Saskatoon, reusable straws and cleaners can be found at Thrive Juice co, the better good, the Remai Modern art gallery shop, and the bulk barn (which is the cheapest at 1 dollar a straw and 50 cents for a cleaner!)

Don’t get the plastic bags at the grocery store

So I have completely switched over to reusable bags at the grocery stores. This is for the ones that carry the groceries out of the store in and the ones that you would put produce in, yep if it has a plastic bag for it at the grocery store… I got a reusable one. I feel like most people probably have gone the way of the reusable carryout bags, but the produce ones maybe not so much based on my interactions with people at the grocery store. I mostly go grocery shopping once a week so it is easy for me to grab my bag of bags (yes it is a bag to hold all of my bags) and head to the stores. However, this is not always the case. Sometimes I run into the store for one thing and come out with many that require a bag to carry. For this reason alone I just have a reusable bag hanging out in my purse/backpack or I will just shove everything into whatever bag I happen to be carrying. So this is another thing that has changed my life especially since plastic bags can no longer be put in the recycling bins in your home (at least in Saskatoon). I have linked the specific ones that I purchased on Amazon, but if you live in Saskatoon I know that the better good sold reusable produce bags.

Do not use k-cups or t-disks or whatever the fuck they are called

So when I moved out this past year I needed to get a coffee machine but I was the only one out of my partner and me who drinks coffee. Well, I drink about one coffee a day at home, work supplies the rest of my coffee fix, so buying a 12 cup coffee maker really didn’t make much sense for me. While we were packing things up at my partner’s house, his mother said that she had a Keurig that she no longer used and that I was welcome to have it (score!) and she also had reusable pods that I could put whatever coffee I wanted in (double score). The funny thing about this was that my partner was attamit that I not get a Keurig because they are so wasteful and promote single-use products. Which is true but if I didn’t buy it or give money to the company is it just as bad??? In the end, I have the Keurig and use the refillable pods everyday and I walk around a little more guilt-free about my carbon footprint. I have linked the amazon reusable k-cup if anyone is wanted to purchase it.

Skip the plastic wrap (use containers to hold food)

OMG, this is one that I hold near and dear to my heart! Before I was ever super into environmental stuff I would hide the saran wrap from my family. They loved to use it! And I do not know why. Like they would put food into a container that had a lid but just put saran wrap over it instead of getting the lid. Like holy Fuck this annoyed me. So, I hid the saran wrap in my room. This forced them to use the lids of the gazillion and one container my mother had collected over the years. Now that I don’t live at my parents I cannot say if they still don’t use it or not but I know that I don’t. Even using an empty yogurt container is better than saran wrap (still not great but better). Moral of the story is DON’T USE SARAN WRAP! Fuck don’t even buy it.

Use glass containers

Just using reusable containers is a big one, but I feel that taking it to the next level and using glass containers is even better! But Devan why is glass better? Well as much as you would like to think that the plastic container is great it does pick up smells, it can warp, and I have noticed that a few kinds get this weird melty kind of stuff on it? I have no idea what it actually is but it weirds me out. Also, plastic can only be recycled a few times before they become unusable any more. With glass, it doesn’t lose its quality as it is continuously recycled. This means that you can keep recycling the glass containers/bottles over and over and over again and it doesn’t make a difference in the quality of the product that gets produced. With plastic, depending on the type, you will only get no recycle-ability or only a few times. So overall using a glass container, in the bigger picture, is better. It might not seem like you are making a difference in your household but you are

Bring your own containers when you go out for food

I had honestly read this on some other blog a long time ago but never actually thought anything of it until I was out for supper the other day and had to ask to take food home (this never happens). I told my partner how easy it would be for me to just have a container in my backpack that I could whip out and put my food into and not even have to worry about asking for a take-home box. My Mind was blown and I will always try and bring a container if I go out to eat.

Be cautious of what you are buying

This one is not really a way to reduce as more of to get you thinking about the stuff you may buy and not realize that it could be wasteful. Like anything that is a single use product or something that is covered in plastic. If you become more aware of what you are buying you might try to avoid using some stuff, which also reduces waste I guess.

Use jars for bulk

If you are a person who goes to the bulk store often, then you might benefit from taking a jar, hell even if you don’t go often still take jars! Just get the cashier to weigh them for you and you are golden! It sounds ridiculous but it is so smart, you don’t have to worry about the stupid bags especially if you have a marker to write on the jar. I find that it helps and is a reusable way to go get bulk items…. Even if it is just candy.

Go electronic

This one is a hard one for me because I love to write stuff down and making notes. I also use a day planner to keep myself organized.  However, I have been moving more towards having everything on my phone. I have a shared calendar with my partner which helps a lot. I try to make notes in an app called keep it. This allows me to make lists and is easy to cross off and  I love it. As much as I want to 100% move to electronic note taking and planning I think it will take some time, but as long as I am moving in the right direction.

Stop using brands that promote single-use products

This one goes hand in hand with the be cautious of what you buy and stop using K-cups.  I feel like this one is the umbrella that these fall under. But still, stop using single-use products. I try and avoid stuff that makes me throw it out after one use. It is hard but if you really put your mind to it, it is possible.

Let me know other ways or ways that you try to reduce waste. I always love learning about other ways or new ways to be green!

So this has been a hot topic for quite some time. Scientists were aware of it since the 1970’s and with the use of computers in the 1990’s, we have just increased our ability of gathering data proving that the temperature of the earth is going up.

With the advances in technology, we now more than ever, have such clear data that Humans, with our advancements, are causing the earth to increase in temperatures. Scientists have said that the earth temperature has gone up 0.82 degrees Celsius since 1880. Now that doesn’t seem like a whole heck of a difference, like we are under one degree. Well if we continue on our path and reach 1.5 degrees, 70-90% of coral reefs will die and if we reach 2 degrees 99% of the reefs will have been killed off.

Maybe people don’t care about coral reefs like I do, but that still is horrible. another fact is we are losing 413 GIGATONS of ice sheets per year. That is a fuck ton of ice. The water levels have increased 7 inches over the past 100 years. 18 of the 19 hottest years have occurred since 2001! Yes in the past 18 years we have had 18 of the hottest years!

So when you see young people yelling at the UN or taking more action against the government for action alleviate some of the damages we have caused you can see why. We have litteral “world leaders” who think that this is a spoof and there are massive amounts of people who believe the same thing.

So yes stop using plastic bags and straws. Yes try and consume less meat. Yes try to avoid shit wrapped in plastic. Try and reduce your waste. I get it if you think that you are one person how much of an affect can you have? Well if the whole of the population thinks that, we got a shit ton of waste added to our already massive amount.

I know that a lot of people are hesitant about making changes, well what is the harm in trying? So what if the scientists made it up? We end up with a better living environment? Is that such a bad thing?

We are not trying to necessarily trying to save the earth. The earth will still be here long after the human race has killed itself off. We are really trying to save the human race. If we continue earth will become uninhabitable for us to live on which at this point means we won’t have a home.

SO please just try. I am not asking you to completely give up everything but just try and avoid certain things. Just Try.

all of my information came from these two sites

Well, I have officially been moved out of my parent’s house for a full year! It is beyond belief to me! Literally, where did the time go? Anywho my “adulthood anniversary” also coincided with the beginning of the end of the year. Wow, that last sentence is a mouthful. But it is true, December is that time where people start to look back on their past year and look at how they have grown or changed. When I look back I see so much change in myself it is crazy!

I moved out and started to live on my own (with my partner)

This is a huge part of my growth. It showed me that I had to figure out all my finances and become “an adult”. This also is the beginning of my year of growth. I don’t know why but When I moved out I felt that I had so much more freedom then I have ever had. Which made me go out a push my boundaries.

I have changed the way I completely think about my body and how I think of others.

I have never been a “small” person, physically. I was always tall and always a bit bigger than most of the children that I grew up with. While growing up I always wanted to be that thin person on the cover of a magazine and up until a few years ago, that was still my goal. This is how I grew up, and my mother still to this day always says “I wish I looked like that.” Which is not a healthy way to think. I started to change the way I thought about my body because of the body positive movement. I would see women who would be bigger than myself just loving their bodies. One day I came across someone who was talking about how fatter people usually hide under clothing. The next thing they said literally changed everything for me. They continued to go one and say you are not hiding your body, people can still see that you are fat, putting a cover over your arms don’t do much to hide your arms. At that moment it clicked and I was like that is 100% true, people can still tell that I have a fat ass and a bigger stomach no matter what I wear so why hide it. So now I embrace my fatness I refuse to hide behind my clothing or not wear a bathing suit because my body is bigger, fuck that!

I do sometimes still have a mental relapse on how I use to think but it doesn’t usually last that long because I remind myself that I am still a bomb ass queen and no one will take my crown.  (a more in-depth post to come)

I have been a model

This seems like a weird one but if you would have asked me if I wanted to be a model even two years ago I would have told you that a woman of my size can’t be a model. But now look at me! I just saw an Instagram post looking for models for a body diversity photo shoot. So I put my name in for it and I got picked! Now I have some amazing photos of myself (vain much?) where I look absolutely glowing. I met some amazing people who were probably sick of me saying that I am the next Ashley Graham or Tess Holliday. But in all honesty, I had the most amazing time at the photo shoot with Saskatoon Local photographer Tammy Zudnich and Freedom Holistic Nutrition’s Jackie Reimche at the Well Collab. I have linked Tammy’s, Jackie’s, and the well collab’s websites below.

I went out to a meet-up where I really didn’t know many people and met strangers

If you are a local Saskatoon Woman, then you may have heard of these monthly meet-ups call Babes who Brunch by the ACE Class. This is a monthly brunch where you get to go and meet other women in your city. Honestly, I was terrified about going but my love of brunch outweighed my fear so I went. When I walked into Drift Cafe that morning I didn’t know what I was going to do, lucky for me there are more outgoing women then myself who introduced themselves to me. I met so many amazing women that day! I honestly say I walked out of that brunch feeling so strong and powerful like I could take on the mother fucking world.

If you would like to attend the next Babes Who Brunch; I have linked the facebook page. You get to connect with other women and get a sick gift bag that always has amazing stuff in it.

I volunteered at the above group and now once a month help strangers meet strangers

So when I went to the first Babes who Brunch they were looking for volunteers to help with the next one. I loved how the first brunch went so much that I made the decision that I wanted to be a part of this! And now I am. When people asking how I got into the babes who brunch I just say I am the Volunteer they cannot get rid of (because I literally signed up for the rest of the years babes who brunch as volunteer) It is just such a fun space to be a part of and I get a DELICIOUS brunch out of it. Volunteering anywhere is great to just help out others (mine is a bit more selfish but we are working on that)

I started this blog

After I went to my first Babes who Brunch, I decided that I was going to start a blog. This Blog as a matter of fact! I felt so empowered and the people that I met were so encouraging I still cannot get over it. So I went home and bought my domain name and started to figure out what I was going to blog about. It has been a bit tough (I am no writer and I do not live a super exciting life) but I am still going at it and hope to continue on (I like to believe that I will get paid for this one day :-P)

I now run a monthly book club

I have talked about the ACE class a lot in this post, mostly because they have been a big part of my growth as an individual. They are also part of me running a book club. They started the wild women book club as a feature of being a member of the ACE class. Now I am a member and  I wanted to start to read more, I wanted to be apart of this. A few weeks into reading the first book, I got an email asking if I wanted to be the Saskatoon book club person. I definitely said yes to this opportunity. It isn’t a very big group in Saskatoon but that is ok, I’ve still got a lot to learn and figure out with it.  So now I am kinda in charge of a book club in Saskatoon.

I went a did a cliff jump! (a small one but still was terrifying)

This summer myself and some friends when house boating. We went white water rafting as one of our adventures and halfway through we were given the opportunity to jump in the river from a 15ft cliff. Now, this is not super high but I am terrified of heights and I was the only one who was going to do it (at the time). It was so thrilling to do and felt amazing because the water was sooo cool. So now I think I can do anything lol.  After I went and did my jump almost everyone who went rafting did it, even my friend who is not a strong swimmer. It was a great time and would so a small jump again

I have become more confident in myself and my profession

I honestly believe that this just came with me pushing myself to get out of my comfort zone. I am constantly going back and forth from being confident to being unsure of myself. And to be fair I still go back and forth, just less often than before. I am still getting into the habit of telling myself to be better for me and I feel that telling myself that every day is helping me so much with my personal growth. Having the confidence in myself has helped me do so much. I don’t give a fuck what others think, I know that I am amazing and that is all that matters. I have done all these different things this year because I have not cared about what others would think of me when I do them. To not have that worry feels amazing. I do sometimes retreat back to ways I use to be, but the amount of time that I think like my old self gets shorter and shorter.

So 2018 has been a whirl of a year! But I am still growing and reflecting on how I can grow more and change. I am falling in love with the person that I am becoming, even though she may have flaws (I am still human), I cannot wait to see what other big changes I can make in 2019! Hopefully everyone has had as equally exciting and changing 2018!Image

Well, here it is, my very first blog post! As I was preparing for my website to get up and running, I realized that I need to write an actual post. I was thinking of things that I wanted to write about but this is the first post so I kinda wanted to make it special.

I was thinking that I would do a body positive post because it is summer and all the hubba-balu about bikini season and being ashamed of your body is real. As I was starting to do some research on body positivity, I was becoming more and more aware of things that I had never even considered being negative towards the body positivity movement. So after this realization, I figured that I should figure out what I want to define as my body positivity views before sharing it with the world.

The second topic I considered writing about was why I need feminism. I spent a whole afternoon defining why I need feminism. I came up with a lot of reasons I just couldn’t figure out how I wanted to write about it. This topic didn’t get too far into being planned because I could not figure out the way I wanted to present it.

So here we are with the first post and two topics that I am not writing about at this time (do not worry I will, just in the future). So what is this post going to be about? Well as I sat drinking beer with one of my good friends and they were asking me about what I plan on writing about for my first blog post, I responded with what I had explained above. They responded with ” I think being honest is a good thing for your blog”. And there I thought, yes I will make my first blog post about myself and be honest about me. Literally my friends really never know what goes on in my life or when I am having a bad day because I like to keep that information to myself. One of my other good friends actually called me out on it recently when I was having a mentally bad day.

Now that I have told you about the post lets get down to learning about me and my insecurities. I hate looking vulnerable, especially now with my recent revelations about life. I do not like showing parts of me that I feel could be used against me. I am a badass bitch who doesn’t take shit from no one. If I am crying, something has truly touched me,  I am extremely angry ( just ask my partner, our fights always have my tears being spilled), or I am in physical pain. I have always been this way. I don’t like romantic comedies because the unrealisticness of it might trigger me to cry. When I was younger I remember being told to suck it up, maybe this has formed this wall around me but who knows?

I think that part of the reason I do keep things to myself is that I am a confident, don’t take no shit badass and if I show my weaker aspects then I don’t feel like that person. Another reason that I don’t share a lot about myself is that I don’t want to look for pitty. This seems harsh but I have had one life-altering event happen in my life, and when something as drastic as what I had gone through happens, you realize that life is never as bad as it seems. Yes, I may have had a shitty day or maybe I cannot do something because money is a bit tight, but I now realize that there are people out there who have it much worse than me and that I can do something about my situation. I have walked away from my life changing event a better person who looks at the world quite different from most people. Does this make me more guarded and have a little less tolerance for people complaining? Yes, but I am coming to terms with it and trying to ease myself into being better at opening up and maybe having a bit more sympathy for others who don’t view life the way I do.

On a more positive note, other things to know about me are that I love animals! Almost all of them (there are a few that I dislike but not many). I have a stupid amount of knowledge about animals as well. I also enjoy listening to people and taking in their experiences with life. If I am in a conversation with two or more people, I tend to take the backseat and just listen. I absorb the words that they are saying and really digest them. I am a bit shyer when it comes to meeting new people, but once I am comfortable with you, look out, you got sass coming your way!

I do truly love myself the way I am, and I know that I am an amazing person (conceded much?). So there you go,  my first blog post all about me!
